Behind the Bottle: How We Created FIRST IMPRESSION
Introduction
Every fragrance creates a first impression.
Before a conversation begins, before a meeting starts, and sometimes before a single word is spoken, the way you present yourself can already be noticed — and fragrance can become part of that presence.
That idea inspired FIRST IMPRESSION by ALI PARFUM.
We wanted to create a fragrance for men and women who simply want to smell fresh, clean, confident and well put-together every day.
Not something too sweet.
Not something too spicy.
Not something dark, heavy or difficult to wear.
Instead, we wanted a fragrance that could feel comfortable almost anywhere — at the office, university, a business meeting, an interview, a wedding, during daily errands or on a warm summer day.
The goal was to create what fragrance lovers often call an effortless “spray-and-go” scent: a perfume you can reach for without worrying whether it suits the occasion or whether it might feel too strong for the people around you.
But making something this easy to wear was not easy to create.
FIRST IMPRESSION went through more than 30 different trials, approximately six months of research and development, another month of testing and sampling, and around four months of maceration before release.
Throughout that process, we focused on one question:
How do you create a fragrance that feels fresh enough for Pakistan's heat, refined enough for professional environments, comfortable enough for everyday wear, and memorable enough to live up to its name?
The answer became a composition built around juicy melon, bright bergamot and orange, followed by a cool heart of cucumber, sea notes and orris root, resting on a smooth base of white musk, pure Indian sandalwood and amber.
The philosophy behind it was inspired by a quote that stayed with us throughout the entire development process:
“First impression is the last impression.”
This is the story of how that idea became FIRST IMPRESSION.

The Vision
From the beginning, the vision behind FIRST IMPRESSION was simple but ambitious:
Create a fragrance that almost anyone could comfortably wear.
We wanted it to work for office professionals, students, businesspeople, active users, casual wearers, men and women.
It had to feel appropriate in situations where very sweet, spicy, dark or heavy fragrances might become uncomfortable for the people around you.
That was especially important for places such as offices, universities, classrooms, meetings and indoor gatherings.
We were not trying to create the loudest fragrance in the room.
Instead, we wanted to create something that made the wearer feel:
Fresh. Clean. Confident. Approachable. Well-presented.
The fragrance also needed to suit Pakistan's climate.
In cities such as Karachi, heat and humidity can completely change the way a perfume behaves.
A very sweet fragrance can become heavier in the heat.
Dense woods can sometimes feel too strong during the daytime.
At the other extreme, some fresh perfumes smell beautiful for a short time but disappear too quickly.
FIRST IMPRESSION had to sit between those two extremes.
Fresh enough for hot weather.
Smooth enough for professional spaces.
And strong enough to leave a noticeable presence.
That balance became the foundation of the entire fragrance.

Fragrance Pyramid
| Layer | Notes | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Top Notes | Melon, Bergamot, Orange | Juicy, watery and sparkling freshness |
| Heart Notes | Cucumber, Sea Notes, Orris Root | Cool, aquatic, airy and refined |
| Base Notes | White Musk, Pure Indian Sandalwood, Amber | Smooth, creamy, warm and lasting |
Selecting the notes for FIRST IMPRESSION was one of the most important parts of the development process.
We did not want to choose ingredients simply because they smelled pleasant on their own.
Every note had to support the larger idea of the fragrance:
A fresh, clean and easy-to-wear scent that opens with energy, develops into a cool aquatic heart, and finishes with a smooth, refined base.
The challenge was making all three stages feel connected.
Top Notes — Melon, Bergamot & Orange
The opening had to create an immediate positive impression.
We chose:
Melon • Bergamot • Orange
Melon gives FIRST IMPRESSION its distinctive juicy and watery freshness.
Bergamot adds crispness, brightness and a slightly zesty citrus edge.
Orange brings natural sweetness, energy and a subtle tart character that helps soften the sharper freshness of bergamot.
Together, they create an opening that feels:
Fresh • Juicy • Watery • Energetic • Approachable
That first moment was especially important because the entire idea behind FIRST IMPRESSION is built around the impact of the first few seconds.
We wanted the fragrance to catch attention without smelling harsh or aggressive.
Behind this fresh opening, we worked with materials including:
Calone • Melonal • Helional
These materials help create the watery, melon-like and clean character that defines the beginning of the fragrance.
Heart Notes — Cucumber, Sea Notes & Orris Root
The heart is where FIRST IMPRESSION develops its most recognizable identity.
We chose:
Cucumber • Sea Notes • Orris Root
Cucumber creates a crisp, green and watery freshness that gives the fragrance its cooling personality.
Sea notes introduce an airy marine character, creating a sense of openness, movement and fresh air.
Orris root adds softness and refinement.
Its subtle powdery and woody effect helps smooth the sharper aquatic elements and prevents the heart from becoming too harsh.
Together, these notes create a heart that feels:
Cool • Aquatic • Airy • Clean • Sophisticated
To build the cucumber effect, we worked with materials including:
Melonal • Hexenol • Hexenyl Acetate
These help create the crisp, green and watery character associated with fresh cucumber.
For the marine and sea-note accord, materials including:
Calone • Helional • Floralozone
help create the airy, ozonic and aquatic character.
For the orris effect, materials such as:
Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone • Methyl Ionones • Traces of Irone-type materials
help introduce a soft, slightly powdery, woody and refined character.
The balance here was extremely important.
Too much cucumber could make the fragrance overly green.
Too much marine character could make it feel too sharp.
And without enough softness from the orris effect, the heart could lose the refinement we wanted.
Base Notes — White Musk, Pure Indian Sandalwood & Amber
The base required a very different kind of decision.
We could have made FIRST IMPRESSION deeper by using strong oud, leather, vanilla or heavy gourmand materials.
But that would have changed the identity of the fragrance completely.
We wanted FIRST IMPRESSION to remain fresh even during the dry-down.
So we chose:
White Musk • Pure Indian Sandalwood • Amber
White musk gives the fragrance a clean, smooth and skin-like character.
It supports the freshness without overpowering it.
Pure Indian sandalwood adds a creamy, elegant and softly woody foundation.
We use pure Indian Sandalwood — Santalum album, whose naturally occurring components, particularly α-Santalol and β-Santalol, contribute to its smooth and recognizable sandalwood character.
Amber adds warmth, depth and persistence.
For the amber effect, materials including Ambroxan and other amber-type molecules help support diffusion and lasting character while keeping the fragrance transparent rather than heavy.
Together, the base feels:
Clean • Creamy • Warm • Smooth • Refined
The dry-down does not suddenly turn dark or heavy.
Instead, it creates a smooth transition from the cool aquatic heart into a warmer, more comfortable finish.
How the Composition Works Together
The real challenge was never simply choosing melon, cucumber, sandalwood or amber individually.
The difficult part was making all of these materials feel like one complete fragrance.
The opening had to feel bright without becoming sharp.
The heart had to feel aquatic without becoming too marine.
The cucumber had to stay fresh without becoming overly green.
The melon had to feel juicy without becoming too sweet.
And the base had to add depth without hiding the freshness.
That balance is what gives FIRST IMPRESSION its identity.
The fragrance moves naturally through three stages:
Juicy freshness → Cool aquatic clarity → Smooth musky warmth
For us, that transition is what makes FIRST IMPRESSION easy to wear while still giving it a character of its own.
Months of Experimentation
FIRST IMPRESSION took approximately six months of research and development.
During that period, we produced more than 30 different versions.
Some versions opened beautifully but did not have enough depth.
Some lasted better but became too heavy.
Some had too much cucumber.
Others pushed the aquatic accord too far.
In a few trials, the melon became too sweet.
The most difficult question throughout development was:
How do you make an aquatic fragrance stay fresh without making it smell sharp, overly synthetic or heavy?
Fresh notes are often more difficult to preserve than heavier materials.
Adding more aquatic material does not automatically make a perfume better.
Too much marine character can become harsh.
Too much cucumber can become overly green.
Too much melon can feel artificial.
Too much citrus can become sharp.
And if the base becomes too strong, the fragrance loses the freshness that made it special in the first place.
Every trial helped us understand the balance better.
Eventually, after more than 30 versions, the fragrance began to behave exactly as we wanted:
Fresh in the opening.
Cool through the heart.
Smooth during the dry-down.
Noticeable without becoming overwhelming.
Perfecting the Formula
After approximately six months of development, we moved into another important stage:
Real-world testing and sampling.
For approximately one month, different versions of FIRST IMPRESSION were evaluated outside the development environment.
Because this perfume was being created for everyday life, we wanted to understand how everyday people responded to it.
We informally tested the fragrance around groups in office and university environments, involving roughly 100 people in total.
During this informal testing, approximately 80 to 90 out of every 100 people responded positively to the fragrance.
This was not a scientific consumer study.
It was practical wearer feedback.
We wanted to understand whether people with very different fragrance preferences could still find FIRST IMPRESSION comfortable and enjoyable.
The positive response helped confirm that we were moving in the right direction.
Once we reached the final version, the balance felt complete.
The melon was fresh but not excessively sweet.
The cucumber was noticeable without becoming too green.
The marine accord felt airy rather than harsh.
And the white musk, sandalwood and amber gave the fragrance enough smoothness and depth.
At that stage, we knew the formula was finished.
Naming FIRST IMPRESSION
The name came from a quote that had strongly influenced the entire concept:
“First impression is the last impression.”
That sentence stayed with us throughout development.
When someone enters an office, meeting, interview, wedding or social gathering, people begin forming an impression almost immediately.
They notice the way you present yourself.
They notice your confidence.
And sometimes, before a conversation has even properly started, they notice your fragrance.
We wanted FIRST IMPRESSION to become part of that moment.
Not by overpowering the room.
But by making someone nearby think:
“You smell good.”
After more than 30 trials, we finally reached a version where everything felt connected.
The opening had freshness and energy.
The heart had the cool cucumber and aquatic character we wanted.
And the base provided the smoothness and refinement that had been missing from some earlier trials.
At that point, the name felt obvious.
FIRST IMPRESSION.
A fragrance designed around the idea that the first few moments can become part of how someone remembers you.

|---|---|
| Research & Development | 6 Months |
| Formula Trials | 30+ |
| Testing & Sampling | 1 Month |
| Informal Wearer Participants | ~100 People |
| Maceration | 4 Months |
Why We Macerate FIRST IMPRESSION for Four Months
Once the final formula is approved, FIRST IMPRESSION still isn't immediately ready for release.
We allow the fragrance to macerate for approximately four months.
During this resting period, the fragrance materials and alcohol have time to integrate.
This is especially important in a fragrance that combines bright citrus, aquatic materials, musk, amber and natural sandalwood.
The objective is a smoother, more balanced finished perfume.
The journey therefore includes:
**Approximately 6 months of development
-
1 month of testing and sampling
-
approximately 4 months of maceration**
For us, creating fragrance is not about rushing a bottle onto the shelf.
If the perfume needs time, we give it time.
Designed for Pakistan's Weather
Pakistan's climate played an important role in the creation of FIRST IMPRESSION.
In places such as Karachi, hot temperatures and high humidity can make some fragrances feel completely different from how they perform in cooler weather.
Heavy sweetness can become uncomfortable.
Dense woods can become stronger.
At the opposite extreme, some very light fresh fragrances disappear quickly.
Our challenge was to build something in between.
The melon, bergamot, orange, cucumber and aquatic notes give FIRST IMPRESSION its refreshing character.
White musk helps maintain cleanliness.
Pure Indian sandalwood creates a smooth foundation.
Amber gives the fragrance additional depth and persistence.
The aim was to create a perfume that could remain comfortable during a long working day in Pakistan while still having enough personality to be noticed.
Performance and Recommended Application
FIRST IMPRESSION was not designed to overpower an entire room.
Its purpose is to create a fresh, clean and noticeable presence around the wearer while remaining comfortable for everyday use, office environments and warm weather.
For our preferred experience, we recommend approximately:
12 Sprays
Our recommended application is:
-
8 sprays on clothing
-
4 sprays on pulse points
We prefer applying most of the fragrance to clothing because fabric can be an excellent carrier of perfume. It can hold fragrance for longer and allows the scent to release gradually throughout the day.
The remaining 4 sprays on pulse points help the fragrance develop with body warmth and create a more natural scent around the wearer.
Good pulse points include:
Sides of the neck • Wrists • Forearms
The number of sprays can always be adjusted depending on the weather, environment and personal preference.
For FIRST IMPRESSION, however, we generally recommend focusing more of the application on clothing rather than skin to help maintain its fresh aquatic character for longer.
Actual fragrance performance can vary depending on:
Skin chemistry • Weather • Humidity • Clothing • Application • Environment
This is why fragrance performance will never be exactly the same for every person.

The Final Fragrance
The finished FIRST IMPRESSION is exactly what we originally wanted it to become.
A fragrance that feels:
Fresh enough for everyday life.
Clean enough for professional environments.
Comfortable enough for warm weather.
Refined enough for important moments.
Memorable enough to carry its name.
It opens with juicy melon, bergamot and orange.
The fragrance then moves into its signature cucumber, sea-note and orris heart.
Finally, white musk, pure Indian sandalwood and amber leave behind a smooth and refined dry-down.
FIRST IMPRESSION was never designed for one specific type of person.
It was created for people who simply want to smell good and feel confident wherever the day takes them.
For us, it represents an important side of ALI PARFUM:
Original fragrance doesn't always need to be complicated or loud.
Sometimes creating something simple, balanced and genuinely wearable is one of the hardest challenges in perfumery.
Conclusion
FIRST IMPRESSION began with a simple idea:
Could we create one fresh fragrance that people from very different lifestyles and fragrance preferences could comfortably enjoy?
Finding the answer took time.
More than 30 trials.
Approximately six months of research and development.
Another month of testing and sampling.
Informal feedback from around 100 people.
Approximately four months of maceration before release.
Every stage brought us closer to the same goal.
We weren't trying to make the loudest fragrance.
We weren't trying to make the sweetest fragrance.
And we weren't trying to make the most complicated perfume.
We wanted to create something people could actually make part of their lives.
For the office.
For university.
For meetings.
For first dates.
For interviews.
For weddings.
For normal days.
And for those moments when making a good first impression matters.
The finished fragrance combines a juicy melon and citrus opening, a cool cucumber and aquatic heart, and a smooth foundation of white musk, pure Indian sandalwood and amber.
But the story behind FIRST IMPRESSION is ultimately about more than individual notes.
It is about presence.
Confidence.
And the idea that sometimes, the smallest details are the ones people remember.
“First impression is the last impression.”
